PHP is the programming language WordPress runs on. The version of PHP your hosting server uses has a direct impact on how fast your site runs and how secure it is. It is a detail most business owners never think about — and one that often causes problems because of that.

Why it matters

  • Speed — Newer PHP versions process WordPress significantly faster than older ones. The difference is measurable in page load times
  • Security — Older PHP versions no longer receive security updates. Running an outdated version leaves your site exposed to known vulnerabilities
  • Compatibility — WordPress and most reputable plugins require a minimum PHP version to function correctly. Running an old version can cause errors or prevent updates

What version should you be running?

WordPress recommends running the latest stable PHP version. As of 2025, that is PHP 8.2 or higher. Anything below PHP 8.0 is outdated and should be updated.

Many sites run on old PHP versions simply because nobody checked. Your hosting provider can tell you which version your server is running, and switching versions is usually straightforward on managed hosting.

How to check

Your hosting control panel typically shows your current PHP version. If you are not sure where to find it, or if you are running something outdated, it is worth flagging to whoever manages your site.

This is one of the things we review during a website checkup. It is also part of routine WordPress maintenance. Explore more in our hosting knowledge base.
