An XML sitemap is a file that lists all the pages on your website and tells Google where to find them. Think of it as a map you hand to search engines so they can discover and index your content as efficiently as possible.

Without a sitemap, Google can still find your pages — but it takes longer and pages can be missed, especially on newer sites or sites with content that is not linked prominently.

What a sitemap does for your SEO

A sitemap does not directly improve your rankings. What it does is ensure that your pages are known to Google and eligible to rank. If a page is not indexed, it cannot rank at all. The sitemap is the most reliable way to tell Google that a page exists and should be considered.

It is particularly useful when:

  • You publish new content and want it indexed quickly
  • Your site has pages that are not linked from the main navigation
  • Your site is newer and has not yet accumulated many external links

How to check if your sitemap is working

Most WordPress SEO plugins generate a sitemap automatically. You can usually find it at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml or yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml. Once you have the URL, submit it in Google Search Console so Google processes it actively.

Search Console will show whether the sitemap was accepted and how many pages it includes. If the number seems too low or pages are missing, there may be a configuration issue worth investigating.

A website checkup includes verifying your sitemap is in place and correctly submitted. More in our SEO knowledge base.
